Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future

The Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (ACSF) promotes and advances collaborations across Cornell and with selected external partners, leveraging Cornell's resources to help build a sustainable future for the world.

Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise

In the 21st century, numerous companies have begun to reverse the traditional separation between competitive strategy and social issues. This trend represents a new approach to the goals of sustainability by establishing programs that profit while improving the quality of life for people and the planet. Cornell's Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise is dedicated to making the trend of sustainable development universal. The center seeks to generate and promote knowledge about sustainable development through cutting-edge research and education that focuses on environmental and social issues in business.

Cornell International Institute for Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD)

Through a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and problem-oriented approach, CIIFAD works throughout the world on such issues as global food security, sustainable rural development, and environmental conservation.

Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program

The Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program (CFNPP), created in 1988 within the Division of Nutritional Sciences, conducts applied research and engages in technical cooperation and training on issues of poverty, human resource development, and food and nutrition policy in developing countries and in transition economies of Eastern Europe. Emphasis is on strengthening the capability of institutions and individuals in developing countries to generate and utilize such knowledge and information.

Cornell Outdoor Education

Offering courses, team building exercises, and expeditions, Cornell Outdoor Education (COE) is one of the largest collegiate outdoor education programs in the country. The mission of COE is to develop teamwork, leadership, and growth through outdoor experiential learning by teaching wilderness skills, promoting environmental responsibility, and empowering individuals and groups. One of the most popular programs is Wilderness Reflections . In late summer new Cornell students spend a week in the wilderness camping, hiking, swimming, kayaking, or rock climbing while building interpersonal and leadership skills.

Cornell Waste Management Institute (CWMI)

CWMI addresses the environmental and social issues associated with waste management by focusing University resources and capabilities on this pressing economic, environmental and political issue. Through research, outreach and teaching activities, CWMI staff and affiliated researchers and educators work to develop technical solutions to waste management problems and to address broader issues of waste generation and composition, waste reduction, risk management, environmental equity and public decision-making.

Lab of Ornithology

The Lab of Ornithology is a nonprofit membership institution whose mission is to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. The Lab's programs work with citizen scientists across North America and beyond.

Shoals Marine Laboratory

Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) traditional expertise combining marine science education with adventure is being enriched by three emerging themes: sustainability, engineering and conservation. At SML, with the help of credit students, interns and experts from Cornell, UNH and the local seacoast NH community, the challenges of institutionalizing sustainability and development of strategies to enhance sustainability on Appledore Island are at the forefront of SML's plan for the future.

In addition, many academic departments are involved in sustainability. In particular, the Department of Natural Resources, City and Regional Planning, and Design and Environmental Analysis have been leaders through their involvement in education, research, and outreach.
