The Cornell Campus Sustainability Office within Facilities Services and David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future are now offering a part-time paid position for an undergraduate student interested in sustainability who would like to gain experience working in an office setting that coordinates with all divisions and departments of campus to help achieve Cornell’s sustainability goals.

The assistant would conduct organizational research on our public reporting within both academic and operations sustainability initiatives. The assistant would assist in Cornell’s data collection and review process for the national Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). Particular attention will be paid to programs not fully recognized in our current reporting and the assistant will work closely with staff to ensure data quality across all categories.

The Campus Sustainability Office coordinates sustainable campus activities including the Climate Action Plan and partners with organizations and academic groups across campus and in the Ithaca community to transform the campus into a ‘living laboratory’ for sustainable solutions. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (ACSF) advances multidisciplinary research and cultivates innovate collaborations within and beyond Cornell. The position would begin in February and continue through the submission of the 2015 STARS submission in February/March. The assistant would work 20 hrs/week total during the summer and 10 hrs/week during the school year. Federal Work Study NOT required. Open to all majors. Pay: $11/hour. This is a shared position between Campus Sustainability Office in Humphreys and the Atkinson Center in Rice Hall.

Job Responsibilities:
Compile, update and expand data for AASHE STARS Report. Responsibilities and projects will include:

  • Data research related to university sustainability initiatives, tracking, and compilation
  • Sustainability photo, media, and news tagging/organization
  • Blog support
  • General office tasks and errands
  • Attendance at several sustainability meetings will be required (depending on class schedule)

Necessary Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy.
  • Ability to work in self-directed fashion, as well as, within a team environment.
  • Basic background knowledge of sustainable development and campus sustainability Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility.
